Five spots to hike in the nude
As any avid outdoor lover will know, there's no better way to wind down after a stressful week in the office than heading out for a stroll, a hike or a climb on a Saturday morning.
While the thrill of being outdoors is enough for most of us - grasses brushing our bare legs and sun kissing our cheeks - there are more and more people who are preferring to break away from those stupid societal constraints and experience nature in all its glory by shedding their clothes and getting the sun to kiss those other cheeks too.
According to SANFED South Africa's naturist community is thriving, as membership numbers have burgeoned in the past three years from a shy 130 in 2009 to more than 8 000 at present.
If it's something you've been considering, the good news is that there are a whole variety of excellent activities to pursue in the buff, including wine tasting, sailing and swimming.
However, a simple hike in the nude (in a place where it's allowed) may be a good way of gauging whether it is a lifestyle you would be able to pursue.
Here are five places to take your boots (and nothing else) out walking.
Striptease trail, Garden Route
This gorgeous hiking trail is located in the heart of Tsitsikamma and offers a delightful combination of forest trail and pool hopping.
The 5km River trail is managed by the Tsitsikamma Lodge and Spa and takes about 3 hours to complete. Because the trail is booked and then reserved exclusively for you and your partner, privacy is guaranteed.
There are 11 pools, each named to encourage to have a bit of fun, discarding more and more items along the so-called striptease trail. While it starts quite innocently with Pebble pool, it gains momentum as you go along with Bikini, Topless, Bottomless, Boobs and finally ‘Kaalgat.'
If you like the sound of this, but prefer bathing in the buff only once in a blue moon, check out these great spots for skinny dipping around the country.
Harmony Nature Farm, North West
Nestling against the cliffs of the majestic Magaliesburg mountain range in the North West Province,Harmony Nature Farm is only thirty kilometres from Rustenburg and approximately one hour and a bit from Johannesburg and Pretoria.
The farm is privately owned and located on 132 hectares of bushveld that is home to an assortment of harmless creatures including zebra, monkeys, jackals and duikers.
A variety of easy to medium hiking trails are spread out across the property, allowing guests to explore the breathtaking scenery at their own time. Self catering accommodation is available in the form of camping, caravans, cabanas, cabins and chalets.
Kiepersolkloof, North West
Billed as the oldest private naturist resort in South Africa, you'll find Kiepersolkloof in the North West province as well. It's located about 60km from Rustenburg perched on the side of the Magaliesburg mountain range.
The resort is characterized by a tranquil bushveld atmosphere and beautiful views all round, making it the perfect spot to lose yourself in the natural beauty.
As with Harmony Nature Farm, Kiepersolkloof offers a variety of easy to medium walking trails that offer guests the opportunity to bump into bushbuck, warthogs or kudu, among others.
The resort also provides self-catering cottages for your snoozing pleasure and you can always take the nature theme up a notch by camping at one of the many available campsites.
